What are credit-card surcharges?
Surcharging passes card processing fees to your customer instead of absorbing them.
Kolleno partners with InterPayments to calculate these fees automatically ensuring compliance with all card-network and state rules.
Before you start
Stripe account – You’ll need a connected Stripe account
InterPayments API key – Provided by InterPayments to calculate surcharges.
Step 1 – Connect Stripe
Go to Settings → Integrations → Payments → Stripe.
Select your desired account (Sandbox or Live).
Complete the Stripe OAuth connection.
You should now see Stripe connected.
Step 2 – Connect InterPayments
In Settings → Integrations, click Connect under InterPayments.
Enter your API Key from InterPayments and click Connect.
Once connected, the indicator will show Connected.
Step 3 – Add a customer card (optional)
Select a customer’s Invoice.
Click Charge customer → Add card.
Send the generated secure link to your customer.
Step 4 – Generate a surcharged payment link
On the invoice, select Charge customer → Stripe.
Confirm the amount and click Generate link.
Kolleno shows:
Amount – Original invoice value.
Surcharge – Calculated fee.
Surcharge fee percentage – e.g., 2.75 %.
Total – Amount + surcharge.
Copy the payment link generated by Kolleno and send it to your customer. Alternatively, click Open link to view the payment page.
Step 5 – Customer payment flow
When your customer opens the link they’ll see the Kolleno customer portal with your branding. The flow is as follows:
Location and card details – For compliance, customers with U.S. cards must select their state (e.g., New York) because surcharging rules vary. The customer then enters or confirms their card details.
Review surcharge – The portal displays a summary of amount, surcharge, surcharge fee %, and total.
Confirm and pay – The customer clicks Confirm and Pay. Kolleno processes the payment via Stripe and uses InterPayments to collect the surcharge. Upon success, a confirmation message appears.
