The Retry Auto-Charge action allows you to automatically attempt charging a customer's saved payment method again after an initial auto-charge failure. This action is placed inside a workflow and only becomes available when specific invoice and payment conditions are met.
Where to Find the Retry Auto-Charge Action
You can access this feature in the workflow builder.
From here, you can add the workflow condition and choose the Retry Auto-Charge step.
When Retry Auto-Charge Can Be Used
The system only allows retrying an auto-charge when the correct criteria are met. This protects workflows from getting stuck and prevents invalid retry attempts.
Retry auto-charge is only possible if:
The invoice already had at least one auto-charge attempt.
The invoice due date is in the past.
If the workflow has multiple steps and the auto-charge retry fails:
The invoice should automatically move to the next step (to avoid being stuck).
Additional Rules for Payment-Based Workflows
When the workflow is triggered from a payment event:
• Only Failed payments linked to Unpaid invoices can be retried.
• Pending payments are excluded and will not trigger a retry.
If a workflow contains multiple steps and a retry fails:
• The invoice automatically moves to the next workflow step.
• This prevents the workflow from stopping at a failed attempt.
How to Configure Retry Attempts
When adding the Retry Auto-Charge action node, you can set:
• Maximum number of attempts
• Minimum interval between attempts (hours)
This allows you to control how frequently retries occur and how many automated attempts the system will perform.
What Happens After a Retry?
Every retry attempt is recorded and visible in:
• Invoice history
• Payment reporting
These entries create a clear audit trail for your team and help track customer payment behaviour.
