Display Banners on the Customer Portal

Show scheduled messages at the top of your Customer Portal, to every customer or only to the ones they concern.

Banners let you post a message at the top of your Customer Portal, such as new bank details, a new way to pay, an office closure over the holidays, or a reminder about an upcoming deadline.

Each banner can be shown to every customer or only to the customers it concerns. You can also schedule it to start and stop on its own.

Where to find banners

  1. As an admin, click on your company name in the top-left.

  2. Click on Settings.

  3. Select Customer portal.

  4. Open the Banners tab.

The tab lists every banner you have created, in the order they appear on the portal.

Create a banner

  1. Click Add banner.

  2. Fill in the fields described in the table below.

  3. Check the Preview. It shows the banner exactly as your customers will see it.

  4. Click Save.

Field

What it does

Title

Optional. A heading shown in bold above the message.

Style

Info, Warning or Success. Each style has its own color and icon.

Message

Required. The text of the banner. Line breaks are kept, but formatting and clickable links are not supported.

Show to customers matching

Optional. Customer filters that decide who sees the banner. See Choose who sees a banner below.

Show to customers with invoices matching

Optional. Invoice filters that show the banner only to customers with a matching outstanding invoice.

Show from / Show until

Optional. The period the banner runs for. See Schedule a banner below.

Active

On by default. Switch it off to save the banner without showing it yet.

Tip: Use Warning for anything that needs action from the customer, such as updated bank details, and Success for good news, such as a new payment method.

Choose who sees a banner

If you leave both filter fields empty, the banner is shown to every customer. The banner list labels these banners Everyone, so they are easy to spot.

Customer filters

Show to customers matching narrows the banner using customer fields. Only customers who match the filters see the banner.

Invoice filters

Show to customers with invoices matching shows the banner only to customers who have at least one outstanding invoice that matches. Paid invoices are ignored, so once a customer settles their last matching invoice, the banner stops showing to them.

For example, to announce a new way to pay euro invoices, add an invoice filter on currency equal to EUR. Only customers with an open EUR invoice will see the banner.

Using both

If you set both, a customer must match the customer filters and have a matching outstanding invoice to see the banner.

Changes you make to a banner apply right away. When a customer's own data changes (for example, they pay an invoice or a field used in your filters is updated), it can take up to an hour for a banner to appear or disappear for them.

Schedule a banner

  • Show from: the banner stays hidden until this date and time. Leave it empty to start right away.

  • Show until: the banner stops showing after this date and time. Leave it empty to keep it running until you switch it off or delete it.

Times are in your company's timezone, which is shown under the two fields. This is the same for every user, wherever they are.

Banners start and stop automatically at the scheduled times, so there is no need to come back and switch them on or off.

Tip: Always set a Show until date on a temporary notice, such as an office closure, so it does not stay up after it stops being true.

Manage your banners

Each row in the list shows the banner's title and message, followed by who it targets (for example Everyone or 1 customer filter + 1 invoice filter), its schedule and its style.

  • Reorder: use the up and down arrows. When a customer matches several banners, they are stacked in this order, top first.

  • Show or hide: use the switch. A banner that is switched on still follows its schedule and filters.

  • Edit: click the pencil icon.

  • Delete: click the trash icon and confirm. This cannot be undone, so to take a banner down for now, switch it off instead.

You can have up to 10 banners, including the ones that are switched off. Once you reach 10, Add banner is disabled until you delete one.

What your customers see

Banners appear at the top of the Customer Portal, just below the page header, on both desktop and mobile. Each customer only sees the banners that are switched on, within their schedule and matching that customer.

Why is my banner not showing?

Check the following:

  • The banner's switch is on in the list.

  • The current time is between Show from and Show until, in your company's timezone.

  • The customer matches the customer filters.

  • If you use invoice filters, the customer has a matching invoice that is still outstanding. Paid invoices do not count.

  • If the customer's data changed recently, allow up to an hour.
